Default have no choice...

Hi,

Thank for the answer!

I'd like to know the reason why "to infinitive"is followed by "but" as "I have no choice but to go back."
I learned that "~ing" form is followed by a preposition.

Best regards.

Isn't it a conjunction in that context?

I have no choice. I have to go back.
I have no choice but to go back.
