Default put up one candidate

Each party is allowed to put up one candidate.
William has been put up as a candidate for the committee.
Is Chris willing to be put up for election?

Could you tell me what "put up" means in these sentences?

Default Re: put up one candidate

It means 'to present' 'presented'. To present ones self as a candidate means to make ones self available for election.
