Some will say that Mr Cameron's emergency appearance in Birmingham on Tuesday was self-serving and unimportant. I disagree.

This came close to the moment Tony Blair had after James Bulger's terrible murder in 1993 when the then Shadow Home Secretary - talking of 'a hammer blow against the sleeping conscience of the country' - caught the mood of a country adrift in despair.
Mr Cameron did not produce any single, platinum phrase. He did not need to.

Platinum is the most valuable precious metal.

In this context, it is suggesting that he did not produce a brilliant and memorable sentence, but by implication his sentence was perfect in its expression of the mood in the country at that moment.
