Default artist and musician

Whats the different between artist and musician?

For example,
I like Michael Jackson. He's my favorite artist/musician

I like Mariah Carey. she's my favorite artist/musician

In this context, pretty much interchangeable.

About 30 years an "artist" was a painter, and Michael Jackson was a "singer".
Now a singer is an "artist", and someone who paints is a "painter".
"Musician" is still the term for a non-vocalist who isn't a "star". Singers are rarely called musicians (although of course, they are).
