abruptly left an extremely violent and abuzive 10-year relationship
In 1997, I abruptly left an extremely violent and abusive 10-year relationship. My children were 14, 11, 8, and 6. Because I had such a large family, there was no room for us at any of the shelters. Therefore, for 6 months, my children and I slept at a different home every night. To insureour safety, I had to quit my job where I worked for 14 years. We were living on my social security income that I was receiving from my late husband, who was the father of my first two children.
I assume "abruptly" means "suddenly" and "abusive" means "rude in this context, but still I could not understand the emboldened parts even though I know the meaning of individual words.
So you please explain to me the emboldened parts.

I abruptly left an extremely violent and abusive 10-year relationship
The woman was being physically attacked by her partner, who was both violent and abusive, so one day she takes her children and walks out of the house for the last time.
In this context, abusive is much stronger than "rude" and usually means physically injurious
