    Default can't grasp the meaning

    It was then that I first glimpsed how much we have to lose in this life by never getting to know what we have while it is ours.

    Would you paraphrase the last sentence,please?

    At that time it occurred to me that we never value what we have. Only after we lose it, do we begin to understand how much it meant to us.
