persevering industry
Please explain the following in bold in easy English.
1. There can be no persevering industry without a deep sense of the value of time.
Is this just saying "we can't persevere without a deep sense of the value of time"? What's the meaning of "industry" there?
2. His room was an absolute disgrace, and his stereo could be heard three blocks away. He was totally void of motivation and, even though I rode him constantly, nothing was getting done..... I picked up my son, and we arrived at the ballpark a solid hour before game time. We were able to get excellent seats behind first base..... We took the seventh-inning stretch, ate a lot peanuts, drank lots of pop, and ate hot dogs.
Thank you.

1. hard work
2. 'rode' is past tense of 'ride', with the meaning to annoy, pester, nag at.
The other sounds a cricketing term - I wouldn't know a silly mid-on if a maiden bowled it over in front of my eyes.
