Is the following sentence grammatically correct?
I understand that association is a collective noun, so "is recognized" is fine, but the plural "leaders" doesn't seem right.

The Association is recognized as leaders in the field.

Would appreciate your opinions, preferably with an explanation and/or suggestions.

This is a toughie. Technically "The Association" is a singular noun, similar to "flock" or "family", but the Association itself is not a leader, its members are, therefore, the Association is representative of a group of people who are leaderS in the field, so in this case your sentence would make sense even though it doesn't look like it.

How about 'The Association are recognized as leaders in the field?'

Perhaps it's still problematic, but it sounds better to me.
