First, recognize they are two words that you can live your entire life without every hearing (in fact I never have, heard them spoken that is) or reading. So don't sweat them. It's as if learning English weren't hard enough, without subjecting its students to acamedic vocablulary!

Lexis is the lexicon of a language, all its words and idioms.
Collocation is the arrangment of, in grammar terms, a sentence.

Maybe they are learning about grammar. It is possible that they do need to know what they mean, but do not have a good dictionary to hand.

Collocation >>the habitual occurrence of a word with another word or words with a frequency greater than chance; a word or group of words that habitually occur together (e.g. heavy drinker).

There's always colligation to make things a little more unnecessarily complex.

The key phrase being "a little more unnecessarily complex."

That one sounds more like an invasive surgical procedure!
