due = owing
Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enoygh to explain to me the presence of the expression in bold in the following sentence?
“The lender may then declare the entire debt due and owing and may seek to satisfy it by foreclosing.”
I think the terms in question are 100% interchangeable.
due = owed as a debt
owing = owed as a debt
due and owing = owed as a debt and owed as a debt
Thank you for your efforts.
Regards,
V.

I think the interpretation of (due = owed as a debt)
is not correct.
Due = Owed and payable immediately
Please treat Due and owning as a phrase which basically means “defaulter”
due and owing = Account payable but not paid till today (Defaulter).
The subsequent clause "may seek to satisfy it by foreclosing.” which means: he may forfit the right of the mortgagor to redeem his mortgage.

Re: due = owing
Hi Manas Ranjan Mallick,
Thank you for your prompt reply. Thank you also for your witty recommendation to treat “due and owing” as a idiomatic phrase. And yet I would turn your attention to some brief excerpts of my dictionaries:
owing = due, outstanding, overdue, owed, payable, unpaid, unsettled (Chambers Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms)
owing = owed as a debt (Answers.com)
due = owed as a debt: outstanding, owed, owing, payable, receivable, unpaid, unsettled. (Answers.com)
A debt is often said to be due from a person where he or she is the party owing it, or primarily bound to pay, whether the time for payment has or has not arrived. The same thing is true of the phrase due and owing.
Thank you again for your kindness.
Regards.
V.
