Default You have nothing to lose but your chains

    Dear teachers,

I am surfing the Internet and encounter the following sentence:
"You have nothing to lose but your chains."
What does this sentence mean? What is the meaning of the word 'chains' here? thanks.

You have nothing to lose but the things that are holding you back. If you lose your 'chains' you can move ahead!
