we've been through a lot
Hi,
I have a question about this sentence, "we've been through a lot" in this context. What does it mean? Does Nick actually say, "we've been going through a lot" ?
Thanks for your help.

Nick: What are you doing?
Veronica: I was just looking for some coffee.
N: Yeah, there isn't any. They belonged to my father, if you were wondering.
V: How long they been in there?
N: I don't know, five years. You know, Veronica, we've been through a lot, and, uh, I'm freaking out here as much as you are. But you get this look in your eyes sometimes like... like I'm the bad guy.
V: I don't know who you are, Nick. You just magically show up like some knight in shining armor, ready to save the day...
... ...

It means "a lot of negative things have happened to both of us."

Hi, susiedqq,
It is good to see you again! First, thank you all.
And, according to these explanation from you guys, I think "we've been through a lot" and "we've been going through a lot" have the same meaning. "go through" also can be used to express "experience or suffer something unpleasant". right?
What is your opinion?

Re: we've been through a lot
susiedqq, I have another question from Prison Break, I hope you could take a look for me again.
What is the "society set"? Could you tell me more about this one?
... ...
Veronica: Not if they're not looking for us. They think we're dead, right?
Nick: I know. How long's that gonna last?
V: Gotta be quick, be smartabout it. Way I see it, we're just gonna be running in circles if we think we're gonna find exculpatory evidence before the execution, proof he didn't do it.
N: I've gone up against pretty much every prosecutorin Cook County. A man gets murdered, the first person they wanna talk to, to see who his real enemies were, the wife.
V: You wanna go after the queen bee herself?
N: Leslie Steadman. Everyone in town knows the old bird lunches at the Lexington every day. With the society set.

Re: we've been through a lot
go through - experience
been through - exerienced
the society set - the "in" crowd; those whose doings make the society pages of the local newspaper
