We seldom use the expression "Old Folks Home" in the US anymore. We now have 'retirement communities', 'assisted living centers', and 'nursing homes' for our senior citizens.

Some seniors might joke about having to someday go to the 'old folks home'... but the above mentioned names are more commonly used.

As for the Simpsons, there's no telling what they were referring to exactly.

In India the unfortunate parents who have no children or those whose children have left them due to some unavoidable circumstances are now forced to live in homes where some social workers take care of them, including their health.
These places in India are called "Old age Homes" or "Vruddhasram"(place for spending old age in Sanskrit).
Most of them are social organizations which charge almost nil or negligible fees. Yet some commercial people catering to rich Old persons have also come up in recent times.
However, the Indian family system is so strong that hardly less than 0.1% old people are forced to live alons. Usually the children or their distant relatives take care of these old parents/relatives.

There is a whole range of facilities for aging people. "Retirement villages" are places where you can buy an apartment, but you can eat in the communal dining room, and they have nurses on duty, but it's not a Nursing Home. Many places have staged-care facilities so that as a person becomes less and less able to look after themselves, they are moved into a more nursing type environment. Most old people like to remain as independent as they can be for as long as possible.
