1. They did it last week / month / year / etc.
Also last Monday/ July / summer / year / etc.

With calender time periods - no article.


2. We did the exercise at the last lesson.
The last exam wasn't difficult.

With events - 'the' is used.

3. The last person to come was Mike.

The last in the succession of things, facts, people - 'the' is used.
