Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to tell me whether there is a difference between the meaning of the following terms?
1. “gate receipts”
2. “ticket sales”

Context will determine a clearer intent.
I am inclined to understand the term "gate receipts" as being receipts, perhaps I might buy a train ticket from the "ticket sales" counter and when I pass through the gate, the ticket officer would tear off half of my "ticket", he keeps half and I the other half as a form of "receipt".
The meaning is somewhat less distinct if the context was for example... a manager of a football venue who is assessing his patronage, the number of tickets or seats he sold. I think the term might then be interchangeable.
