Insofar as acknowledgement is given to entertainment features in the press, this tends to be grudging and dismissive, as if such contenct detracts from the central political role and purpose of the press.

It seems to be talking about a certain kind of snobbery, as if to say that entertainment journalism is not real journalism. I am not sure what the acknowledgement is that they are referring to. Perhaps they are talking about news.
