Smile adjust/adapt ot the country life

It's not easy for Bruce to adjust/adapt to the country life. He's such a city person.

    Hi,
Do both adjust and adapt fit in the above and mean about the same? Thanks.

No, and the second sentence is your clue to what word to use.

    Thanks, Susie.
But I think both fit but there are different meanings. So I really don't know which one fits better to you.

I would agree that both could be used and feel they are pretty close in meaning within this context.

I think that adjust means taking steps to make a change; adapt means to accept.

The fact that he is such a city person and is now having problems living in the country says to me that he is adjusting to another style of living.

I have not met Adapt as solely meaning accept. To me it means to change something to suit different conditions or a different purpose, or be changed in this way; to become, or make somebody or something become used to a new environment or different conditions; to become familiar with a new situation.
