Anciently, diamonds were worn as polished stones.
---Does it mean that polished stones were treated like diamonds?
(Not a teacher)
I understand this sentence to mean that diamonds were worn in the form of polished stones (they polished the diamonds and wore them). The diamonds are the "stones."
Until the end of the 14th century, diamonds were not faceted but polished into a cabochon form [a rounded hump].
