Re: Punt return A 'punt' is a kick of the ball by the offense to return it upfield (i.e. away from the goal which they defend). A member of the other team catches the ball, and runs with it back toward his opponents' goal: that is a 'punt return'. It was also a 'scoring return', because he was not tackled or stopped before carrying the ball all the way back to the goal that the punter was trying to protect.
