Does it mean ‘Where did this come from’? People tend to use this. Is that because ‘’d’ is a short form that easier to pronounce than ‘did’?

It's called a contraction. -d could be 'did' or 'would'. If we had the context, we'd be able to tell.

Please also note that in fixed phrases: "I'd rather...", "You'd better..." the 'd stands for 'would' and 'had', respectively, and since these two expressions are very often mixed up by learners, they invariably become an item of nearly all grammatical tests for intermediate level students.
