How to make the kids more interested.

Hello, my name is Justin and I'm a 7th grade English Teacher for the academically special kids. The kids who don't understand English as well as the other kids do. I have been noticing a drop in interest during this section of our book. The kids don't understand how to identify Linking Verbs and Subject Complements. Like, use this sentence as an example:
Dancing is one of the oldest forms of communication.

The kids don't know what to do in this kind of a situation. Does anyone have any tips for me? Like, how to make it more interesting, or how to help them understand it better.

Could you turn it into a game where the subject complement gets longer and longer, beginning with one word, and each child in turn has to repeat it and add to it? Perhaps even on both sides, e.g.

His X is A
His XY is AB
His XYZ is ABC

etc.
