EX: The farmer has no sickle.
EX: The farmer had no sickle.
Basic Distribution
"not" goes before a main verb:
EX: I
sleep. => I
do not sleep.
Note, "do/does" is inserted before main verbs.
"not" goes after an auxiliary verb:
EX: I
am asleep. => I
am not asleep.
The verb HAVE has two functions. It functions as a main verb and it functions as an auxiliary verb.
EX: I
have a car. (Main verb)
EX: I
have got a car. (Auxiliary verb)
Note, "got" is the main verb.
If the verb HAVE (i.e., have, has, had) functions as a main verb, then insert "do/does/did" before "not", and change 'has/had' to "have":
Present Tense
The farmer
has a sickle.
The farmer
does not have a sickle.
Past Tense
The farmer
had a sickle.
The farmer
did not have a sickle.
If the verb HAVE (i.e, have, has, had) functions as an auxiliary, do not insert "do/does/did". Add "not" after the auxiliary:
Present Tense
The farmer
has got a sickle.
The farmer
has not got a sickle.
Past Tense
The farmer
had got the sickle from me.
American English 'had gotten'
The farmer
had not got the sickle from me.
'had not gotten' Contractions
The farmer doesn't have a sickle.
The farmer didn't have a sickle.
The farmer hasn't got a sickle.
The farmer hadn't got the sickle from me.
Usage Note: "have no"
When you use HAVE to express possession (e.g., I have a car), it functions as a main verb, so use 'do not have' to negate it:
Affirmative: I
have a car.
Negative: I
don't have a car.
If you use "no" to negate the object, then what you're expressing is this:
I
have a car. (I have something, and that something is a car)
I
have no car. (I have something, but that something doesn't exist)
I don't have a car. (have (possess) => not have (not possess)
The farmer
has a sickle. (She has something)
The farmer
has no sickle. (She has something that doesn't exist)
The farmer doesn't have a sickle. (have => not have)
I
have shoes. (I have something: shoes)
I
have no shoes. (I have something: no shoes)
I don't have shoes. (have => not have)
In short, when you see the phrases no shoes, no sickle, and so on, ask yourself, How can a person
have something that doesn't exist?
Please note, SCREAMING (i.e., using all capitals) is considered rather rude. Please use lowercase.
