Default conditional tense

how can i teach the future, past, present and past with the conditional use of will, can, and able?

The best way to illustrate the use of the conditional, I think, is in direct v reported speech.

Direct: He said, “They will return.” (will return → future)
Indirect: He said that they would return. (would return → conditional)
