Well, you heard right, but there's a difference between 'color' and 'the color':
What is
the color? (OK)
What is

What color is it? (OK; 'What' functions as a modifier)
What the color is it? (Not OK; either "What" or "the" to modify "color", but not both)
Note,
What color? It's
blue (in color).
What day? It's
Monday.
*
What date? It's November 18th. (Note, 'What' is redundant. It stands for the exact same noun as does 'date'.
Replacement Thursday is the day tomorrrow. (OK)
What is the day tomorrow? (OK; 'What' replaces 'Thursday')
Thursday day is it tomorrow? (Not OK; Two nouns as subject)
