You and me, both. I tend not to get into the origins, though. Differentiating formal usage versus non-formal usage seems to work well, as long as the terms informal/slang are clearly defined as well.

Firstly, I'd surely never call you slang, even though X slang Mode has a nice ring to it. Secondly, it's definitely not slang.

It's 'conversationally respectable!" It's English! To me, non-formal, informal, and slang are not synonyms. They carry different meanings. That's what I mean by clearly defining 'informal/slang'... Oops, that should have been 'and', not slash (/). Oops.

Please see Bartleby (The Pronoun), scroll down to the bottom. It's all about "It's me". I just came across it a few moments ago while looking for the origin of Saxon possessive -'s.

What? Conversationally respectable?

"It's me" This is correct English. It is even more correct and acceptable than "It is I." In fact, "It is I" is acceptable by some, and to many many others it sounds conversationally strange - very strange.
