Horses

Dear teachers,

The other day I was reading the newspaper. It read that a parade was held in memory of those firemen who died on 11/9. I saw a piture which showed a man leading a horse on whose back there was a pair of empty boots. Also in Canada during festivals for example Easter children as well as adults ride wagons for entertainment.

My question is : Is horse any symbol in North America culture? It seems they are very important in people's life.

I'm not a New Yorker, Jiang, but I suspect that the horse and boots represented the police officers who died during 9/11. The New York City police force includes a unit of mounted officers.

Horses are not a specific symbol, except in situations related to where they are used-- in law enforcement, by cowboys, the US Army cavalry, in rodeos, and of course horse racing.

Your question reminded me that when JFK was assassinated, a horse was led through the streets with empty boots in the stirrup. If my memory serves me well, these boots were facing backwards and this meant that a leader had fallen.

Just to add something else to your horse stories, here in Canada we have a large amount of police force across Canada riding horses. They are called Mounties...Royal Canadian Mounted Police and they are known for their beautiful red uniforms.

During many ceremonies..anything from dignitaries visiting our country to Remembrance Day or special funerals, you will see the Mounties in their full glory. Quite the spectacle!
