I've lost my umbrella. I think I left it at the college.

I think 'left', not 'have left', should be used. However I have doubts. Sometimes we say: I've left my notebook at home (=have forgotten to take it).

On the other hand, by 'left at the college' we give additional characteristics to the event already mentioned. So it's not the action itself but circumstances attending the action, namely, the place of the action that is the focus of the sentence.

Be coz you are regarding the consequence of leaving your umbrella so the correct tense could be "have left". If you want to use past tense then a specific time in the past would be required.

I think this is right, if you imagine the situation of coming home and realising that you don't have your umbrella, you say; 'I've lost my umbrella.' you think for a moment, then you say; 'Ithink I left it at the college.'

I have another sentence where I'm not sure about the tense form:

Where did you get scratched so badly? - I fell from a tree.

Or is it possible to say: Where have you got scratched ...? - I have fallen from a tree.
