    Default Verbal tenses

    "For hundreds of years its very name was (simple past) a synonym for the most remote place on earth, but today Timbuktu faces a new kind of extremity."
    I'm not sure if the expression "for hundreds of years" implies the use of the present perfect or not.

    Not necesserily. In your sentence past simple is correct. Otherwise Timbuktu would still be the most remote place on earth.
