While in the 19th century US in political slang the phrase “buying a new roof” was widely used at the second half of the 20 century it was replaced by the expression “buying an election”. Does the phrase "buying a new roof" means "buying the protection of influential people"? | Hello KLPNO, It seems to me from the context above that "buying a new roof" is an old expression that means using a lot of money to win an election. I imagine one candidate spending $10,000,000 and another only spending $1,000,000 - and the first candidate winning.
I hope that helps
