I think these are cliches. Many of those have been used to be politically correct.
ex. politically correct phrases to say someone is stupid:

A few feathers short of a whole duck.
The cheese slid off her cracker.
Too much yardage between goal posts.

and many many more.

If we don't want to offend a person by being too straightforward or blunt we use expressions that let us avoid that. These are called politically correct terms.

Political corectness in general relates to political injustice matters such as race, sex, religion, etc. Political correctness, however, has been recently applied to almost anything in search of more socially acceptable terms. Some of them are quite funny, others sound very pompous and pretentious...especially the ones used by the politicians.

There are too many politically correct terms to list them all, Latoof. They have become extremely popular in recent years and you can find anything from very serious ones to very humorous - something you wouldn't hear the politicians use at all.
