    Exclamation "..if I were..."

    IŽd like to know why some times we have to use "I were" instead "I was". I'll be glad to recieve an answer... Thank you!

    If only I were at home now!

    'Were' is the subjunctive form of the verb 'to be'. It is used to describe a hypothetical situation in the present. The speaker is away from home and imagines how good it would be if he were at home at this moment.
