Default you're down and out / to fall so hard

Hi,

"When you're down and out
When you're on the street"

1. Does 'you're down and out' mean you feel bad and you leave home?

"When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you"

2. What does 'evening falls so hard' mean?

Thanks,

- and you have no money, you sleep in shop doorways...

"When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you"

2. What does 'evening falls so hard' mean? If you have a home to go to, evening is a pleasant time - for rest and recreation. If you're living on the street, evening just means it gets dark and cold and there are not so many people to talk to (opportunities for getting some kind of warmth - either human or material or both).

Thanks,

Until I heard the song I hadn't met the collocation "evening...fall..hard", but I'm pretty sure that's what Paul Simon meant.
