I would use it when I know something unpleasant is about to happen.
ex.The grim looking clouds were a sign of an impending thunder.
pending
Not yet decided or settled; awaiting conclusion or confirmation.
Still in the process, awaiting conclusion.
This phrase is used a lot in legal papers.
-Has the jury reached a verdict yet?
-No, the verdict is still pending. We hope to hear something really soon.
