There may have been twenty girls outside the hotel. Hardly in the boy-band league. --- Does it mean they didn't have any boys with them?

No - it means they are not attracting much attention, unlike the boy-bands which are mobbed by fans.

Ah, I see. It just means that they, as a band consisting of only guys, didn't relly attract that much attention. Thanks.

It is not related to whether the band is only male or not, but that the band is neither particularly exciting or attractive. Most "boy-bands" are artificially put together and heavily promoted. Whether there is real talent is not considered.

OK, so the sentence: There may have been twenty girls outside the hotel. Hardly in the boy-band league, means that there were twenty girls outside, but we weren't particularly attractive. (actually it's about a band consisting only of males) I understood it this way: There were only twenty girls outside the hotel which is nothing special if you take into account other "boy-bands" which attract loads of groupies.
