    Default Collocation Questions!

    Hello everyone!

I need your help for scoring some collocation items.
Students were asked to fill each with a one-word verb in each item.
But they gave some verbs that I've not expected. Could you please see them and tell me which are possible or not?

    1. I visited Professor Kim’s office to __________ him some questions.

    Students' Answers: ask, inquire, raise

    2. It’s too chilly today. Be careful not to __________ a cold.

    catch, get, have

    3. Jane did not like the book, so she went back to the bookstore to __________ a
    refund.

get, claim, receive, request, make, have

    4. Since I got a new checking account, the bank advised me to __________ my old account.

close, cancel, remove, eliminate, delete, discard, abolish, withdraw, efface

    5. Everyone ought to __________ a vote in the coming election to ensure that a democratic system operates properly and fairly.

cast, have, get, exercise, make, take

I really appreciate your help. I need your native intuition.

    Best Regards,

    Spoonful

    Thank you bhaisahab!

Could you please read and think the following once more?

    3. Jane did not like the book, so she went back to the bookstore to request a refund. claim could also work.

get, claim, receive, request, make, have

=> The possible answers I have are originally 'get, claim, request'. Isn't 'get' propor in the context?

    4. Since i got a new checking account, the bank advised me to close my old account.

close, cancel, remove, eliminate, delete, discard, abolish, withdraw, efface

=> The possible answers I've thought of are 'close, cancel, remove'. How do you think?

    5. Everyone ought to cast a vote in the coming election to ensure that a democratic system operates properly and fairly.

cast, have, get, exercise, make, take

=> The possible answers seem to be 'cast, have, and get'.

    Thank you very much.

get, claim, receive, request, make, have

=> The possible answers I have are originally 'get, claim, request'. Isn't 'get' propor in the context? Yes, but it assumes that she is entitled to a refund, which may not be the case.

    4. Since i got a new checking account, the bank advised me to close my old account.

close, cancel, remove, eliminate, delete, discard, abolish, withdraw, efface

=> The possible answers I've thought of are 'close, cancel, remove'. How do you think?
'Cancel' could work but 'close' is the usual term, 'remove' is not correct.

    5. Everyone ought to cast a vote in the coming election to ensure that a democratic system operates properly and fairly.

cast, have, get, exercise, make, take

=> The possible answers seem to be 'cast, have, and get'.
The way the sentence is phrased indicates that everyone already has a vote and that they should use it, so the correct word is 'cast'.

    Thank you very much.

Jane went to the bookstore to get a refund. (Her means of getting a refund may have been to request a refund. Also, she may have felt she was entitled to claim a refund.)

Can I add the red part into the original sentence? Because it seems more reasonable for me. Or am I wrong in this? ^^

I'm afraid I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

    Mr. Ronbee,

Could you kindly explain to me the meaning of "Her means of getting a refund may have been to request a refund." and the usage of "have been to" ? My explanation to your original sentence is that she uses some kind of means to request a refund. Is this right? Because as far as I am concerened, "have been to" is passive usage. Thank you very much ^^

It means that she asked for a refund. It's that simple. (She could also have demanded a refund, but asking would be more effective.)
