A psychologist may also attempt to describe the client's personality in terms of how he or she deals with life. For example. some people like to lead, and some prefer to follow the lead of others. (Hello, everybody, I am confused about these two "lead". Could you tell me what they means in this sentence separately? I have already looked them up in the dictioary, but...) Some people are active and outgoing, while others are quiet and reflective. ... ...
Thanks for your kind help !

Dear IMPSX-UE:
'Lead' is used as a verb and as a noun in your sentence:
For example. some people like to lead (to lead = verb), and some prefer to follow the lead (the lead = noun)of others.
verb:
'Don't follow her; she'll just lead you to ruin.'
'He usually leads the discussions in class.'
noun:
'The dancers followed the lead of the first couple.'
'Don't be nervous, just follow my lead.'
I hope this is helpful,
Petra
Dear pyoung,
First, thanks for your kindness and patience about my "stupid" question.
I just... you know, want to make sure that I got this in a correct way.
Okay, here are my two different way of understanding about these two "lead".
1. For example. some people like to lead, (some people like to be the best at sth., to be in the first place) and some prefer to follow the lead of others. (and some prefer to copy their action, to follow their steps to be the best or first)
2. For example. some people like to lead, (some people like to be the leader of sb./ sth., to head sb./sth.) and some prefer to follow the lead of others. (and some prefer to follow others' leadership, to be willing to be controled by others)
Pyoung, these are my two kinds of comprehension about the original sentence. What is your opinion?
Hi, n° 2. is the closest in meaning.
Thanks, Bhaisahab!
Yes, IMPSX-UE, the second interpretation is the closest in meaning.
Sometimes people are characterized as 'leaders' or 'followers'. As you say, those who prefer to lead are people who like to make decisions, to decide the direction and priorities of a group or project, while those who prefer to follow someone's lead are those who are willing to work toward an end as long as they have been given a clear understanding of what they are to do.
I hope this is helpful,
Petra
