I went to the cinema
Hi, I' d like to know if both sentences are ok. If they are I' d like to know if there any differences in meaning or, if they have the same meaning, which one a native speaker would prefer
Thanks rip
1) In the afternoon I went to the cinema with my friends to see "Christmas in New York"
2) In the afternoon I went to the cinema with my friends and saw "Christmas in New York"

They both mean more or less the same, n° 2 means that you definitely saw the film, n° 1 says only that you went to see it, maybe you couldn't get in. Having said that I would probably use the first.

Re: I went to the cinema
whether someone says "This afternoon I went to ..." instead of "In the afternoon I went ..." would it sound better, wrong, nothing special?
Thanks

'This afternoon', means today, 'in the afternoon' could mean any afternoon; it would depend on the rest of the conversation.
