Default We wanted to have a pet so we took the dog in.

Are both the sentences possible? If they are, what is the difference then?

1) We wanted to have a pet so we took the dog in.

2) We wanted to have a pet so we took a dog in.

Thanks !

1) we wanted to have a pet so we took the dog in. you presume that your listener knows which dog you're talking about

2) we wanted to have a pet so we took a dog in. you're talking about taking in an animal, in this case a dog, not a particular dog
thanks !
