Default New Jersey girl

Dear teachers,

I was watching an American film, the name of which is maybe " Girls from New Jersey" ( This is a translation from Chinese into English).
From the film I could see that girls from New Jersey are looked down upon. Is it a theme in the film or it is true that girls from New Jersey are looked down upon? If it is the latter why ?

Looking forward from you.

Thank you in advance.

I believe the general assumption is that "Jersey girls" are not as sophisticated as New York gals.
