festering evil
In the text below, what does "festering evil" mean?
The real trick, in capturing perverse or eccentric behavior on the screen, is to discover those aspects of it that touch on something in all of us, even if it's something we think it's necessary to hide. Among contemporary film makers, Mr. Lynch still stands as the master of this particular skill, with his unforgettable vision (in " Blue Velvet ") of the festering evil to be found beneath placid surfaces and his willingness to plumb the scariest depths of his hidden nature.
The text above was taken from CORPUS.
I have a serious ploblem with these words "to fester" and "festering".

Re: festering evil
festering is an adjective to describe evil.
It is under-the-surface evil, building up . . . and then -WHAM!!

Re: festering evil
Just one more question. May I change the word "festering" in the text above for one of those below, without changing the meaning the text?
1 putrid, rotten, putrefied, decayed. 2 corrupt. 3 pestilential.

No, because something that is festering is in the process of becoming putrid, rotten etc.

Re: festering evil
Sorry, but this expression is driving me crazy.
I don't know a word in portuguese that fits here.
Is there another way to rewrite the text above by using another expression instead of "festering eveil"? Something very close?

Re: festering evil
Oh, if you must . . .
try: deep, dark, growing evil . . .
