## What's differences between "on the street" and "in the street"?

As the title states, what are their meanings, respectively? Sometimes I saw "in the street" but other times "on the street", I'm confused...

if you say : In the street this means at a point within an area or a space

and if you say : On the street this means in or into the position to covering, touching or forming part of a surface...

I'd say it is just a little difference between BrE and AmE.

In BrE we say 'in the street', 'I am in the street outside your house' for example. In AmE they use 'on the street' to say the same thing.

I prefer BrE, however, in this particular case, I'd say "on the streets".

But I thought "on the street" means literally, physically - e.g. he was standing "on the street". However, if we want to describe an orphan who grew up "in the street", is it correct to use "in the street" instead of "on the street"?...

In Canadian English, On the street, means either physically being on it, as I am walking on the street, or it also means that you are homeless.

Further, how do you describe, e.g. the recent crime rates, "in the street" or " on the street" of LA?
