Yes, some people are excessively hard on foreign speakers and are more likely to think something is wrong from a foreign learner's mouth that they would accept from a native speaker. I don't think there was an error in your sentence, but an alternative verb might have been more appropriate.

Sometimes, this is done innocently- it sounds strange, whereas it might sound less strange from a native speaker. Other times, however, it is snobbery.
