Transitive verbs, notice the Trans- part, require an object in order to pass on, or transfer their meaning, whereas intransitive verbs, notice the prefix in-, meaning not, do not need an object to pass on, or transfer their meaning because the object is already inside the verb; it's part of the verb's meaning.
