Default Usage of "How are you doing with...?"

Hi all,
I am little confused with the usage of How are you doing?

If want to ask somebody how he/she is interacting(or dealing) with local people

can I say "how are you doing with local people?"

or this is a wrong way to put it?

Please help me with this.

Thanks in advance...

"How are you doing with something" is usually used to inquire about someone's status with some sort of activity or progress with accomplishing something.

For example:
How are you doing with learning French? (Are you making good progress?)

In response to the example you gave, I would use "How is it going with the local people?"
