I imagine that it depends on both the country in which the bank is, and even individual banks.
I know that in the bank with which I deal, I would have to go into the actual bank to do this. A joint account can be accessed by either party at any time. In Canada, that means that I could go and take all the money out, close the account and open one with my name only.
I am not a teacher.

I don't know how to get your account separated, but your bank does.
A letter to a bank looks like a letter to any business.
