Default laid low VS Be laid up

    Hello

Could someone please tell me whether there is any nuance between the two sentences?

    - My father laid low with the flu last week.
    - My father was laid up with the flu last week.

    Thank you.

Both sentences mean the same, the second is more commonly used.
