possessive

hello,

i'm a proofreader at a newspaper in portugal and one of our football teams is set to play newcastle united pretty soon.

now, regarding the name of the newcastle united football ground, and according to the apostrophe and possessive case rules that i know, i thought it should be written as 'st james's park'.

however, i checked the guardian style guide and it has an entry for this very football ground, where it says that it should read 'st james' park'.

i'm all confused. could somebody please help me out? i think i'm right...

I don't know the exact rule, but there is an exception for some proper names ending in 's' exactly so you don't have stuff like james's because it looks too weird

The rule is as follows:

If the word already ends in -s, then do not add another -s. Just add an apostrophe, like this,

Mr. Jones => Mr Jones' car.
Mrs. James => Mrs. James' car.
