Which of these is correct:
1-Beside me stood John Thompson.
2-Beside me stood John Thomson whom I had known and respected for a very long time.
3-Beisde me was standing John Thompson.

I think 1 & 2 are correct.

I'd put a comma in number 2 before 'whom' as it's a non-restrictive or non-defining clause.
