In addition, syllabification is based on how the word sounds, or its
phonetic representation ([...]), and not on how the word is spelled, or its
letter representation (<...>).
For example,
Letter repesentation: <cli
mb>
Phonetic representation: [klai'
m]
The letters <mb> represent one sound, [m]. The <b> is silent. Moreover, the letters <ng> also represent one sound, [ng], a velar nasal:
<banged> [bae
ng'd]
In English, the letters <nd> represent two sounds, [n] [d],
<handy> [hae
n'
di:]
but in some languages of the world, e.g., Aboriginal languages spoken in the USA and Canada, <nd> represents one sound.
