Don't worry. 'Degrading' isn't the issue; it's 'normal wear and tear' that various linguists - like Deutscher, in the book that David L mentioned - are talking about.

I've heard a rumor that there was once a time in Britain when school children were taught that using "have got" instead of "have" was grammatically incorrect. Is that (still) true?

Change is often difficult, and some changes are harder to swallow than others. But you gotta admit one thing:
Without change the English language would be dead.
